Discovering Aotearoa

I am now doing Discovering Aotearoa so I don't really know my culture because I was never brought up with my mum or dad so I am going to talk about my culture background up until 4 years ago. I say for years ago because the person who help me learn new things about myself I only just meet 4 years ago and that is my aunty Jo. So my aunty taught me how to hoe a waka she also taught me how to navigate using the stars. The most important thing though she taught me though is how to respect other people and that everyone is different and to never give up if you fail. That is my four year background. I am from Mangakahia my marae and some of my whanau are out there. I love it there.

  1. Kia ora Zhynaliyah,

How are you doing today? It's lovely and sunny in Whangarei, I hope the weather's nice up north too!

It's great to see you completing so many activities, I'm really enjoying reading them and getting to know you better :) Have you been enjoying the programme so far?

Your Aunty Jo sounds like a lovely woman, and what incredible lessons she has taught you. I would love to learn how to navigate using the stars, what a special talent to have. It sounds like she has taught you many great things, like respecting other people.

Thank you for sharing about your culture and background, Zhynaliyah. Culture can mean lots of things, so even if you don't know lots about your background, your whanau now and your traditions are still you culture :)

My marae is Tauwhara but I don't get there much unfortunately. Do you get to visit your marae and whanau much?

Keep up the great work, and maybe next time try include some colours or images. I'd love to see how creative you can be :)

    Tayla
